Austria is one of the most beautiful countries you can see in the world. It is so green they have some of the prettiest mountains and lakes you will ever see. Austria has a lot of tourist attractions that you must visit. In Austria, there is a beautiful palace, museum, cathedral, and, best architecture and building you must see. To reach Austria I would recommend flying to either Vienna or Salzburg. Preferably Salzburg because it’s closer to the Alps & the most beautiful airport in Austria. Also, this is the 2nd largest airport in Austria. So here are the best places you can visit in Austria.
The first best place to visit in Austria is Hallstatt. This is my favorite place in Austria. When you see Hallstatt for the first time it feels like a fairy tale (more like a Frozen Disney movie). Hallstatt is located on Lake Hallstatt. To reach there it is about one hour drive from Salzburg. You drive through a tunnel to reach the city.
Hallstatt has the oldest salt mine in the world and it’s undoubtedly worth visiting the place. It has beautiful mountains surrounding it and the town is just so beautiful. It is famous for its 16th-century Alpine-style houses. Hallstatt used to be a salt-mining village but now it is a very popular tourist destination. I would recommend you go there and walking around enjoying the beauty of the town.
If you are planning to visit Hallstatt then the best time is in the winter. Because Hallstatt becomes a true fairy tale destination. If you are there then don’t forget to take advantage of the “Sauna culture”.
This is one of the most beautiful towns. Gosau is so a gorgeous place to visit. If you want to see the European Alps this is the perfect place to visit. This place has some of the prettiest churches you can ever see in your life. This is not the main tourist attraction so there is less crowd. This is an absolutely beautiful place to visit in Austria. So, I definitely recommend taking a little pit stop here.
3 Gosauseen Lake
Another best place to visit in Austria is Gosauseen Lake. It is just a 15-minute drive from Gosau. You will pass a beautiful lake with a nice little bench. Gosauseen is just such a beautiful lake. This is situated between the Dachstein glacier and the mighty peaks of Gosau.
There is a beautiful trail and you can walk around the whole lake. Also, there is an awesome lodge where you can get food and you can also rent a boat and enjoy the lake even more. If you want to explore more at Gosauseen Lake then you must take the Gondola ride where a rotating panoramic terrace offers magnificent 360-degree views.
There is also the infamous Austria sky ladder. This ladder is 40-meter long. This ladder is also called “Ladder to Heaven”. It is made of steel cables and it is the highlight of a climbing tour of the Donnerkogel, in Austria’s Salzkammergut resort area.
4 Pasterze Glacier
Another best place to visit in Austria is the Pasterze Glacier. This is a 30-minute drive from the Grossglockner to reach Pasterze Glacier. This is the biggest glacier in Austria which is approximately 8.4 kilometers. Here you can do hiking & this is also the best place for hiking.
There is a trail that led to the base of the glacier. The glacier is so beautiful & also there is the lake at the bottom which is so great and so pretty. The surrounding mountains are absolutely huge. You are able to see the Grossglockner Mountain there. This is really cool place to visit if you are in the Grossglockner international park.
5 Grossglockner High Alpine Road
If you love to do road trips and you love to do bike rides then this is the place for you. It is the highest road in Austria at 2,504 meters. The Grossglockner is one of the highest in Europe. The name Grossglockner comes from mount Grossglockner which is the highest peak in Austria at 3,798 meters.
If you are there then don’t miss the sunrise. To catch the sunrise, it will cost you around €40 and in the park, the view is so beautiful. You will absolutely shock by the beauty in the colors of the mountains. To reach the top is a little scary but nothing too crazy. I hope you will not miss the chance to watch the sunrise.
6 Krimmi Falls
If you like waterfalls I definitely recommend visiting Krimmi Falls. These waterfalls are the highest waterfalls in all Austria at 300 meters high. There are three stages to the waterfalls. The biggest being over 140 meters. In my opinion, it is about a 30-minute hike to the lowest waterfall which is the biggest and most impressive in my opinion.
If you are feeling like an adventurer you can also do hiking on the trails. Then you can hike up to the top. There is a nice little Lodge where you can have lunch.
7 Wolfgangsee Lake
Wolfgangsee Lake is situated within the state of Salzburg. This is one of the best lakes in the Salzkammergut resort region. This lake is about one hour drive from Salzburg. When you reach there, you will be blown by the mountains and the color of the water. The water literally feels like an ocean. This gives you an excellent view of the lake. You must experience this once in your life.
Here you can take the boat ride and the ride is so beautiful. I definitely recommend hanging around Lake Wolfgang to see if you get a chance. The best time to visit Wolfgangsee Lake is during the summer months. Because you can catch the regular ferry which departs at least four times per day.
Another best place to visit in Austria is Schafberg. To reach Schafberg you can take a ferry from St Gilligan and then take a steam train up to the mountain. The train is a little bit expensive it costs around €40. So, if you are a budget traveler and want to save some money you can take a cable car from St. Gilligan or you can hike it up.
The view on the top is absolutely stunning. You get the best panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and lakes. There are some cafes where you can get some lunch and enjoy the beautiful views and you can just hike around the area it is so pretty.
9 Burgruine Steinschloss
Another best place to visit in Austria is the castle of Burgruine Steinschloss. It is believed that this castle was built in the 12th century. It has five round towers and it is just an absolutely magical place. The best thing about this castle is it is free to enter and you just hike there you can go whenever you want.
10 Zillertal Alps
This is the last and the furthest destination. This place is over a 4-hour drive from Salzburg is right on the Italian Austrian border. One of the coolest places in the Zillertal tall Alps is the ole Ferrer hike. It is a hike that goes up to a peak of over 11,000 feet high. But on the way, there is a famous bridge that has an absolutely gorgeous view of the lake below. This bridge is famous all over social media.
If you keep walking up the trail there is also a nice little mountain hut where you can get some food and enjoy the view below. There is also a supercool dam on that Lake and it is just a really beautiful place with amazing views.
So, these are the top 10 best places to visit in Austria. There are plenty of places in Austria that you must explore.
